El Portal de Elche is a central square of the most beautiful and picturesque of Alicante. It was built in the 19th century as a place for water supply and a meeting point. Formerly it was called Plaza de Elche, de las Horcas, Real de Fernando VII, Constitution (alternating these last two several times), the Generalissimo and, after the inauguration of the current Plaza de la Montañeta, regained its traditional name of Portal de Elche. It is divided into four parterres with a main axis, where its typical kiosk is located, replica of the central kiosk demolished in the 1970s to install a pool that for years housed the sculpture "like a star" by Eusebio Sempere. In the four corners of the square were small kiosks. Its trees are characteristic, with four Ficus macrophylla of enormous size that are protected by the Law when their trunk exceeds a perimeter of 6 m and a height of 1.30 m from the base.
