Originally it was built to retain the waters of the avenues of the Vinalopó river, habitual in torrential rains, and take advantage of these waters for use in irrigation. It has been these avenues that, throughout the life of the dam, have been responsible for filling it with sediment, reducing the water retention capacity and forcing several cleanings to recover the capacity. In 1995 it burst the regulating gate, causing a large avalanche of sludge that contributed to emptying the dam. In September 2007, the dam's rehabilitation work began in order to retain water again, to create a natural marjal landscape, in which vegetation and fauna are created. In March 2008, the dam begins to retain water after a period of almost 13 years abandoned. It is currently recognized as a Cultural Interest Asset by the Valencian Generalitat.
absolutely incredible!! Amazing!
Located at the southern exit of Alicante and overlooking the sea, this park lives up to its name by drawing hundreds of palm trees between roads and water areas with waterfalls, divided into two parts: leisure and social.
On top of Mount Benacantil there is the Castle of Santa Bárbara. In one of the sides of the mountain there is one of those curious formations that nature offers us. The shape of face is perfectly recognizable from several points of the city, and there are many legends and stories that are told about this curious face that is watching Alicante from the top.
Cova Tallada is an impressive place of marine caves. They are accessible both on foot and by kayak. It has a series of natural pools that are fantastic for swimming and diving. The cave is spectacular, it is about 75 meters wide and 15 meters high. It was excavated in its day to obtain coarse with which singular buildings like the own castle of Denia were constructed. The sea enters the cave forming small pools of cold water, as it does not receive the sun's rays. If you want to continue investigating, the cave has many large passages, already without any lighting, essential lanterns, which is where the rough or sandstone for the constructions was extracted, Some room is huge. There are also pools that accumulated the filtered water of the mountain. In summer they do not drip but in the months when there has been rain you can see the drops of water that are stored in these pools. At the entrance of one of these rooms you can read an inscription on the rock that indicates that Philip II was there in 1599.
The lighthouse which faces the bay from the Summit: Cap de Sant Antoni, was the heir of other defensive structures which took advantage of the privileged plain’s location. The hermits built it to isolate themselves from worldly life and thus in their honour, the Sanctuary, "Ermita de San Antonio" was built in the 14th Century, which also became the name of its rugged geographic feature. Its land was also occupied by a watchtower erected to defend themselves from the pirate raids; these buildings subsequently became the current lighthouse. This scenic viewpoint is undoubtedly one of the most privileged panoramic landscapes of the Valencian Coast. There are two plant microreserves here; one in its North cliff face and the other is in l´Illot de la Mona at the foot of the Cape.
The "Peñón de Ifach", symbol of the Costa Blanca, rises in the sea as calcareous rock from 50,000 m2 to 332 m. of height and one kilometer in length. Linked to the land by a narrow isthmus, it is the result of a landslide from the nearby "Sierra de Oltà", constituting one of the most singular and beautiful geographical features of the entire Mediterranean coast. It is one of the most visited natural spaces, a meeting point for divers, climbers and hikers. The route to the top of the Ifach Rock has two levels of difficulty. The first section to the tunnel is very simple, and the rest of the path to the top we would label it as medium-high difficulty. Whatever your level, the visit to the Natural Park is "mandatory" if you are on the coast of Alicante.
